Introduction to the 'Talking Tariffs' project

Thank you for helping Essential Energy design the electricity tariffs of tomorrow. We have committed to looking at different tariffs and undertaking tariff trials to make the cost of electricity fairer for everyone.

We charge customers a ‘tariff’ to recover the costs of operating our network to deliver electricity to more than 865,000 homes, hospitals, schools, businesses and community services. The word ‘tariff’ can mean the same thing as ‘price’, but tariffs are more than just a single price. They can comprise a number of different components and varying the combination of components can produce different bill results for customers - resulting in some customers paying more, and some paying less.

You won’t see our tariff on your electricity bill as retailers compile all the electricity supply chain costs into a range of tariff products from which customers can choose. The tariff you see on your electricity bill, of which our network charges form about 35%, is directly related to the retail product you have chosen and can be structured very differently from our network tariffs.

The way customers use electricity, directly impacts the costs for us to deliver it. When coupled with the significant roll-out of household solar photovoltaic panels over the last decade our existing tariffs, which are primarily based on the amount of electricity that customers use, regardless of when it is used, means that many customers are now paying less than their fair share of our costs with other customers paying more than their fair share to make up the shortfall.

Adjusting our tariffs to ensure that the electricity prices our customers pay aligns with the relative costs they impose on the network will improve fairness for everyone. Adjusting our tariffs will not result in Essential Energy receiving higher revenues, nor will it result in any fee on top of what customers are already paying. Instead, the changes are about delivering a fairer way of sharing our costs between the customers who benefit from using our network.

The customer and stakeholder engagement on this website has five parts.

If you are a residential customer:

  • Before you start the five parts, we'd like you to complete a short survey so we can learn a little more about you. This survey is at the bottom of this page.
  • Following completion of the survey we would then like you to read, in order, the five parts listed under ‘Important Links’ on the right-hand side of this page.
  • There is a short video included in each of Parts 3 and 5
  • There is a discussion forum on what factors you think we need to consider in redesigning tariffs within Part 4
  • Part 5 concludes with a survey to gather your initial thoughts on some potential tariffs that Essential Energy could trial

We expect that completing the activities on this website will take 30 to 45 minutes.

Following completion of the survey below, you can move on to the next section Part 1: Essential Energy's role

If you are a small business customer or a retailer, advocacy group or university representative:
  • You do not need to complete the survey in this section
  • We would then like you to read, in order, the five parts listed under ‘Important Links’ on the right-hand side of this page.
