When complete, the South Jerrabomberra development area will deliver 1,500 residential lots, a business park, industrial estate, Innovation Precinct, Regional Sports Complex, Intermodal Transport Hub and new High School to the Jerrabomberra area. It will also house NSW’s third Regional Job Precinct, creating regional economic opportunities and job growth in the area.

Essential Energy is responsible for ensuring the local electricity infrastructure meets the current and future needs for the new development. This includes the construction of high voltage powerlines and a new zone substation. To prepare for this, the developers of the area, including the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, together with Essential Energy have examined many options for the new powerline while considering technical, economic, environmental and societal aspects.

Essential Energy has identified the rail corridor on a section of the non-operational Queanbeyan to Bombala rail line as the preferred option for the new powerline and a site within the South Poplars’ Innovation Precinct area for the new zone substation.

Construction will involve extending the 132kV powerline from TransGrid’s Queanbeyan Bulk Supply point, south through the non operational rail corridor and connecting to the new zone substation.

Essential Energy will soon commence detailed designs of the infrastructure, to inform consultation with local residents, local community groups, Transport for NSW, Regional NSW, the ACT Government and the community.

    Happy new year!

We've made it to 2025, and things are starting to get really exciting as we close in on completion of the project.

During December and through to February the cables for the underground component of the line are being installed and we're ready to install aerial markers on the overhead component of the line. The markers (red and white balls to the naked eye) are to help identify powerlines to aircraft and are being installed following consultation with Canberra airport- safety is always our number one priority!

Next steps from here will be to energise the powerlines, with our full demobilisation from site on track to be completed by April this year.

Some progress pictures of the Zone Substation and an example of what the aerial markers will look like are below.

The Zone Substation civil component of the project is well and truly underway with the transformers installed and tilt panels for the buildings going up. We've also stood our high voltage power poles. Here's a few pics of our progress.

Contractors for Essential Energy have recently completed vegetation clearing along the route of the new powerline installation. The works have certainly tidied things up quite a bit, particularly along the disused rail corridor.

    Cheers,
