Dubbo and Surrounds High Voltage Upgrades

In parts of Dubbo and the surrounding communities, we're making some big upgrades to our high voltage electricity network which supports homes, businesses, industry and the mining sector- from Wellington through Dubbo to Cobar and beyond. This will help us keep providing you with a safe, reliable, and resilient power supply. It will also allow us to connect new loads and renewable energy sources to the network.

One of the major changes you'll notice is the replacement of some of our existing timber and concrete power poles. The new poles will be taller and made of steel, meaning they’ll look different to the poles that you see now. We'll also be stringing new overhead wires. These significant visual changes are part of our efforts to improve the network.

Our local Essential Energy teams, along with contractors, traffic controllers, and specialists, will be carrying out these major works. We're working in many locations and will do our best to minimise disruptions to the community. Over the next 12 months, you might experience some power outages, general construction activities, and occasional road closures- we’ll have traffic control in place. Customers impacted by power outages will receive prior notification.

  • I have a neurostimulator and my residence and vegetable garden is very close to the proposed power lines. I have an appointment with my medical specialist to discuss the risk I will be faced with due to the Dubbo upgrade. I own my residence and resided here for 14 years and do not wish to move https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/~/media/Files/HealthyWA/New/Radiation/Powerlines-Electromagnetic-Fields-and-Health-2017.pdf

    GAM,

Thank you for your question and the additional resources.

It would be great to learn more about the neurostimulator and how these works may impact you as it is not a question I have been asked before. We can also conduct testing at your property to see what the current levels are from your boundary to the lines and provide some information on how these may be impacted with the new construction.  If this would be helpful. please feel free to reach out to me on jilliankirwan.lee@essentialenergy.com.au or 0410 404 707 to line up a time to discuss.

    Thanks again for your question,

    Jillian

  • How many trees are being removed in the Boundary Rd to Argle Ave section? It would be good to maintain as many of the established trees for native birdlife that live in this area and not reduce the tree canopy especially where tree species don't grow taller than they do at present.

Dee asked about 2 months ago

Thank for the question. Around 60 trees and shrubs will need to be removed in the Boundary Rd to Argyle Ave section.

Some vegetation will be removed early to allow construction to proceed, and some may need to be removed once the new powerline is in place to maintain safety and reliability. We are aiming to minimise removal where possible.

To help offset this, we are working closely with Dubbo Regional Council to replace vegetation with low-growing native species that support local birdlife and maintain canopy cover where appropriate, including Bottlebrush species, Dwarf Coral Gums and Crepe Myrtle.
