Power pole EV charger trial

What is the trial?

Essential Energy has partnered with EV charging company, ChargePost, and Australian manufacturer, Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT), to design a fully integrated power pole AC EV charger for the trial.

The prototype has been installed in the Mid North Coast town of Kew to trial an innovative way to increase charging options for residents and visitors to regional, rural and remote communities.

The community is encouraged to use the power pole AC EV charger free of charge for three months from Monday 7 July 2025.

Differing from other EV charging alternatives, the trial prototype is fully enclosed in a composite pole and connects to the existing overhead network with all cabling run inside the power pole. This eliminates the need to install additional infrastructure and undergo civil and earthworks, reducing the visual and environmental impact.

Due to the number of power poles conveniently located next to parking spaces and their ability to provide higher power charging capacity, power poles have the potential to play a significant role in expanding public 24/7, top-up charging facilities across regional, rural and remote communities.

Where is the trial located?

The power pole AC EV charger is located at 142 – 144 Nancy Bird Walton Drive, Kew within the Port Macquarie Hastings Council area. It is conveniently situated just off the Pacific Highway, close to a local hotel, corner store, farm shop, motel, and golf course.
